Happy day: Students from across the Island came together at the community Back to School celebration hosted by PLP MPs Walter Roban, Michael Weeks, and Rolfe Commissiong at Victor Scott School on Saturday

Hundreds of children were treated to free school supplies and gift bags at a family friendly fun day.

The Back To School celebration at Victor Scott Primary field on Saturday also featured a fun castle, inflatable slide, music, games and food — all free.

The event was organised by Progressive Labour Party MPs Michael Weeks, Walter Roban and Rolfe Commissiong — but Mr Weeks insisted the day was really a community-wide success.

“This was the fifth year and we do it annually to give back to our community,” Mr Weeks said yesterday. “It was a real community effort. Our partners contributed time and skills.

“It demonstrates what can happen when communities come together.”

Pupils from schools across the Island attended the event and picked up giveaways, including bags and stationery. Children of all ages joined in the fun but most were between the ages of four and 14.

DJs Kasper and Dewitt filled the air with music and Funtyme Entertainment’s giant slide was a huge hit with the excited children, as were train rides offered courtesy of Oleander Cycles.

Getting into the spirit of the day, Mr Roban donned an apron and cooked up a storm on the barbecue, while free cotton candy and popcorn was dished out for those with a sweet tooth.

Parents were also engaged thanks to information booths set up by local organisations, including Teen Services, SCARS, Age Concern, The Women’s Resource Centre and the National and Youth Libraries, while stalls offered school uniforms, other clothing and shoes.

A meet-and-greet was also available with Pastor Terry Hassell, of the Heard Chapel AME Church; Brother Hunt, of the Evening Light Pentecostal Church; Pastor David Lambe, of Faith Deliverance Church; and Reverend Nicholas Tweed, of St Paul’s AME Church.

Mr Weeks issued a special “thanks wholeheartedly to all community partners” message from himself, Mr Roban and Mr Commissiong, with particular gratitude to Victor Scott Primary principal Valerie Williams, deputy principal Stephen Coddington, and office assistant Theresa Sinclair.

The event was originally scheduled for August 23 but was rained off. Mr Weeks admitted he had been concerned the change of date would affect the turn out but said he was delighted by the huge success of the day.

“A really good time was had by all,” he added. “We wish children Island-wide a great school year and we look forward to next year’s event.”
