Palmetto Road repairs to begin

Vehicles are still reduced to single lane on Palmetto Road after the major route in and out of Hamilton was damaged in February 2013 and again in 2014. Work to repair a collapsed wall which has impacted traffic on Palmetto Road for more than a year is set to begin next week, according to a Government spokesman.

Public Works Minister Patricia Gordon Pamplin estimated earlier this year that repair work on the wall would begin in September.

Giving an update yesterday, a Public Works spokesman said: “The Ministry is just about to award the contract for the repair of the wall at 12 Perimeter Lane. Work is anticipated to start next week.”

Traffic on a section of Palmetto Lane has been limited to a single lane since February 28, 2013, as a result of a collapsed wall near the westbound lane.

Repair work was reportedly hampered by the collapse of a second section of wall a year later due to heavy flooding.

Ms Gordon Pamplin told the House of Assembly in May that temporary measures had been put in place to handle road drainage, but work on a permanent solution would not begin until after contracts for the project had been properly tendered.

At that time, she said work would likely take around three months, but she believed both lanes of the road would be reopened before the end of the year.
