Church offers power and facilities to storm-hit residents

Residents without electricity and Belco staff working to restore power can use the bathroom and charge electronics at St Paul’s Church in Paget.

Toilet facilities, water, power, Wi-Fi access and the ability to heat food are among the facilities being offered to those still suffering the effects of Tropical Storm Fay.

About 30 people had visited the church’s Christian Education Centre on Middle Road by about 8.30pm tonight.

Reverend Anthony Pettit, Priest in Charge, said they had seen a “steady stream of folk”.

“Normally we have the pre-school in here but Government has closed its schools so we might as well use the facility,” he said. “Our two most popular items have been charging electronics and use of the Internet.

“But we’ve had three families in cooking dinner, one person having a shave and someone came in to get water for their dog.

“It’s nice that the community comes together. Our motto is ‘a loving family of God, serving our community’ and this was a very simple way to serve the community.

“Community is what St Paul’s is all about.”

The Christian Education Centre, at 69 Middle Road, Paget, which is beside the Paget gas station, will be open to residents again on Tuesday from 10am until 9pm.

Reverend Pettit said he hoped suffering residents would not be affected by badly by Hurricane Gonzalo, forecast to impact Bermuda this weekend.

“We’re hoping we’re not practising for this weekend but if we have to we’ll do this again,” he said.

“People seem to be very appreciative but this is a very simple and very obvious thing for us to do and we’re very happy to do it.”
