Tropical Storm Fay resulted in hundreds of insurance claims, starting in the immediate aftermath of the storm’s impact on Sunday, according to BF&M president John Wight.

The insurer initially handled “approximately 100 claims — most of them are minor and for damage to homes or boats”, Mr Wight said, adding: “Over the next two or three days, we’re still expecting a lot of people to assess the damage and, if they own boats, to make their way to them and see if they’re come off their moorings.”

By late yesterday, he said, roughly 200 claims had come in, mostly for roof damage — plus a few vehicles damaged and several boats”.

It will take time for insurers to add up the many small claims before they can obtain a ballpark estimate of the overall hit sustained by Bermuda during the storm.

Meanwhile, an Argus Group spokesman said the company had also been fielding claims since Sunday, reminding clients to contact customer service at 298-0888 with questions over storm claims. She added: “At the same time, Argus is monitoring the upcoming Tropical Storm Gonzalo and encourages residents to take the necessary precautions to prepare themselves and their property in advance of the storm.

“The Argus Group has compiled a list of hurricane preparation tips, which are available on the website at www.argus.bm.”

Andrew Pell, assistant vice president of property and casualty echoed the call to prepare for rough weather, which is possible for the coming weekend.

“Tropical Storm Fay reminded us of the unpredictability of the weather, but there are preparations we all can do that will maximise the security of our homes and the safety of our families.”
