Dark days are over for single mom

After 17 days in the dark, Raenette Butterfield has found the light at the end of the tunnel.

The single mother, who has been out of power since Fay struck, spoke of her frustration in The Royal Gazette earlier this week and as a result a member of the public offered her a pool house to stay in, with electricity and amenities, until her power was resumed.

Ms Butterfield said the first thing she did when she walked in to her new, temporary accommodation was make a beeline for the fridge.

She explained: “I walked into the pool house, I opened the fridge and I actually felt the coldness of the fridge.

“The fridge light was on and I put myself in – that was a great feeling. It’s the little things we take for granted but because I have been missing that for so long I was like ‘wow this is nice!’ And to have an oven that’s working is nice.

“Everything I need is in the pool house — it’s like an apartment. I was worried I would be inconveniencing them but no. It feels like a big burden has been lifted off me and I am just so thankful because they didn’t have to do that. They said if they’d known earlier they would have helped sooner.”

Ms Butterfield’s nine-year-old daughter Adesina was also overjoyed. “My daughter is so happy,” Ms Butterfield said.

“Once she found out there was Cable there she was like, ‘oh yes!’ She loves music videos and she’s a great dancer — she likes Zoey 101 and Victorious so she will be watching that.”

Since Ms Butterfield’s interview was published in the paper on Thursday, there has been an outpouring of sympathy from members of the public who have contacted this newspaper to ask if they can lend her a hand offering everything from generators to a spare room in a house.

It is understood that Belco has been working to resume service at Ms Butterfield’s own home in Smith’s parish. Around 170 customers remain without power.
