Ministers’ travel bills revealed

New York meeting: Minister Jeanne Atherden

Further details of ministers’ travel costs have been revealed on the Government’s new expenses website.

Health Minister Jeanne Atherden’s recent trip to the United States for the First Joint Meeting of the Signatories to the Hamilton Declaration and the Sargasso Sea Commission cost the taxpayer just under $1,500.

The trip to New York and Washington took place between October 20 and 23.

The Health Minister was accompanied by Kevin Monkman, the permanent secretary for health, and Dr Tammy Trott, the senior marine resources officer.

Ms Atherden’s air travel cost $496.45, while she spent $246 on ground transport and $730 for accommodation.

The website post outlining the trip stated: “After making opening remarks, the minister chaired the first meeting of the Signatories to the Hamilton Declaration on Collaboration for the Conservation of the Sargasso Sea. Presentations were made by the remaining Signatories, including the Azores, Monaco, the United Kingdom and the United States of America.

“At the conclusion of the meeting of the Signatories, the minister chaired the first meeting of the Sargasso Sea Commission in which the commissioners made presentations on their areas of interest.”

Meanwhile, the cost of the three-day trip with Michael Dunkley to New York in September by Dr Grant Gibbons and Shawn Crockwell, the Minister of Education and Economic Development and Minister of Tourism Development and Transport respectively, has also been revealed.

The Premier’s expenses bill of $3,228 was made public last month, but technical issues with the website had delayed the information for Dr Gibbons and Mr Crockwell being put online.

Dr Gibbons’s expenses for the trip totalled $1,200 for two one-way, economy fares to New York and a little more than $50 on ground transport. He made his own accommodation arrangements at no expense to the public purse.

Mr Crockwell’s travel bill came to just shy of $2,500. The breakdown of his expenses included $1,097 on air travel, $1,255 on accommodation and $30 on meals. Mr Crockwell also spent $112 on “miscellaneous expenses”.

According to the government expenses site: “The Minister of Tourism Development and Transport joined the Premier and the CEO of the Bermuda Tourism Authority to attend the launch of Lili Bermuda’s new perfume, based on the recovered perfume found on the Mary Celestia shipwreck off Bermuda, where more than 130 persons attended, including a large representation of media.

“The Minister also joined the Premier and CEO of the Bermuda Tourism Authority to attend a news media breakfast where there were a number of international media organisations to discuss Bermuda and to promote our tourism industry.”
