Tourism goals welcomed by BTA
Bermuda Tourism Authority has welcomed the legislative goals put forward in the Throne Speech in relation to casino gaming and the cruise industry.
Tourism featured heavily in the Speech, and included the announcement that Government will introduce legislation to establish a domestic gaming industry. The legislation aims to develop the hotel industry through new construction, redevelopment of existing facilities, and increased visitor numbers.
The legislative framework, to be discussed in the upcoming Parliamentary session, will include the introduction of a Casino Gaming Commission.
The Throne Speech also pledged to finalise channel upgrades in order to accommodate more and larger cruise ships.
“The Bermuda Tourism Authority is pleased with the hospitality industry legislative goals in the Throne Speech as it relates to hotel development, gaming and the cruise industry,” a BTA spokesman said.
“We believe the items mentioned in these areas will help increase jobs and grow economic activity to the benefit of Bermuda. More jobs and a growing economy are chief among our goals at the BTA and we are confident all legislators share these ambitions.”
Another major boost for the tourism industry was the announcement that ground is set to be broken on Ariel Sands next week as part of an $85 million cottage development that aims to create between 50 and 70 construction jobs.
Furthermore, phase two of the Fairmont Hamilton Princess redevelopment, and construction of the Princess Beach Club in Southampton could create more than 250 construction jobs. On completion, the hotel will look to hire 115 people to staff the operations.
The Throne Speech also highlighted ongoing developments and negotiations with regards to Morgan’s Point, Grand Atlantic, South Beach and the St George’s Club.
