Remembrance Sunday marked in St George
The town of St George fell silent yesterday for two minutes as millions across the globe marked Remembrance Sunday.
Community leaders, local dignitaries, residents and visitors gathered at King’s Square just before 11am to remember fallen service personnel.
Premier Michael Dunkley, Governor George Fergusson and the Sea Cadets were among the scores who gathered for the wreath laying ceremony and then moved up to St Peter’s Church for a memorial service.
St George’s Mayor, Garth Rothwell, said: “It was a touching tribute to the many servicemen and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
“It also seemed very fitting this year given that it is the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War.”
Premier Dunkley added: “Sunday served as an opportunity to remember those fallen heroes who bravely fought in two World Wars.
“I joined others in honouring their ultimate sacrifice which allowed us to enjoy the freedoms and privileges we have today.”
