Shower epiphany brings golden pair to Island
Margaret Tait was standing in the shower when she had a sudden revelation — that Bermuda could be the perfect destination for her and her husband to celebrate their golden anniversary.
Neither Mrs Tait nor her husband Fred knew anything about the Island apart from that it was somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean and it was associated with the mysterious phenomenon known as the Bermuda Triangle.
After her shower, Mrs Tait asked her husband what he thought about the idea and they turned to the internet to find out more.
They were blown away by what they saw and booked a two-week stay at the Fairmont Southampton Resort.
Mrs Tait, a retired receptionist, told The Royal Gazette: “Bermuda just came into my mind and I don’t know why or how. Neither of us had been before. In fact, it’s the first time we’ve been over the pond. But we wanted to do something special because it was our 50th anniversary.
“I knew it was an Island in the Atlantic and not in the Caribbean — I knew that much because I am quite interested in geography. That and I’d heard of the Bermuda Triangle.
“When I was searching on the web, British Airways came up and featured the Fairmont Southampton and it was the hotel I fell in love with first.
“I thought, ‘oh, that is fabulous!’ We decided to book it and that was that.”
The couple, who lives in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, northern England, arrived on the Island last Thursday and have been taking in all of the sights and sounds.
They have visited some of the most popular spots from Sandys to St George’s, including Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo, the South Shore beaches and Gibbs Hill Lighthouse.
“Bermuda is absolutely lovely,” said Mrs Tait. “I can’t get over how everyone greets you when they see you.
“I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve seen and done so far. The beaches are absolutely out of this world. We walked to the beach at the hotel and I paddled all the way down Horseshoe Bay and the sea was beautiful.”
Retired plasterer Mr Tait said the vacation had been almost perfect so far: “I was hoping for a bit better weather actually. It is warm enough just a bit cloudy.
“That’s the only criticism so far. I love the hospitality of people. It’s very friendly. I haven’t been disappointed yet.
“The anniversary date is tomorrow [Friday] so we will go out for a meal.
“We just met another couple from Canada and it’s their wedding anniversary on the same day. We don’t have any other plans, we are just playing it by ear.” Mr and Mrs Tait met in a pub in Newcastle. Mrs Tait recalled: “I was standing talking to him in the passageway and his father came up behind me, tapped me on the shoulder and said, ‘hey, watch what you’re doing with my son’. That was the start of it all.”
They were married at the Civic Centre in Newcastle on February 6, 1965, and now have two sons and three grandchildren together.
As for whether the happy couple will return to our shores, Mrs Tait said: “I am so happy with my choice and I would never say never, though we have paid out a lot of money for it.”
