Man remanded for breach of bail agreement

A man awaiting trial for burglary was remanded on Monday after the court heard he breached his bail conditions.

Kevin Butterfield, 37, from St George’s, had been released on bail by the Supreme Court last year in advance of a Magistrates’s Court trial scheduled to take place this week.

Under his bail conditions, he was required to attend the Southside Police Station twice a week and wear an electronic monitoring device.

However prosecutor Carrington Mahoney told the court that Mr Butterfield had not attended the police station since November 3.

On that same day his ankle bracelet stopped reporting his location.

“He says he didn’t tamper with it,” Mr Mahoney said.

“He just didn’t charge it, which was a requirement.”

Mr Butterfield told the court: “Some threats were made to my life so I had to go underground.

“That’s the only reason I didn’t charge it. Up until then, things were going smoothly.

“I was scared so I just went underground.

“I wasn’t trying to bring harm to my children and my wife.”

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo ordered that Mr Butterfield be remanded into custody until his trial on Thursday.

Earlier in the Plea Court session, Mr Butterfield also admitted speeding and riding without a drivers licence, receiving fines of $650.

While he requested time to pay the fines, Mr Tokunbo ordered that the $150 fine for the drivers licence offence be paid forthwith noting that the defendant had failed to appear when the traffic offences were first brought before the courts.

Mr Butterfield responded that he didn’t have $150, requesting that he instead serve the alternative of 50 days in prison.
