Mark’s $60,000 walk for cancer patient

Fundraising: Mark Anderson

Well-known bus driver and tourism ambassador Mark Anderson is hoping to raise funds for his Goddaughter by walking the length of the Island on Wednesday.

Mr Anderson, the man behind Queen of Bermuda Sybil Barrington, is aiming to raise $60,000 by walking 25.5 miles to support Kamala Smith and her family.

“I would like for people to realise that this is a community effort and that we have to get back into loving our neighbour, loving one another in a time of need,” Mr Anderson said. “This is us coming together as a family to show our love and support for Kamala.”

Ms Smith, 32, had leiomyosarcoma — a cancer of the smooth muscle and connective tissue — diagnosed in September 2011 and has had to receive treatment overseas.

“She is a wonderful, super young lady who is under a lot of pressure right now, and as her Godparent I feel that I must do something — no matter how small it is — because I’m always doing something for other charities,” Mr Anderson said.

Ms Smith has been unable to work since December 2013, which has been putting a strain on her and her family financially. “This is not only for her, but for her family,” he explained. “Kamala has two young children and as a parent and a wife, it’s very stressful.

“Her prescriptions are astronomical. I just want to do something that will make it a little bit easier for her and her family.”

Mr Anderson is hoping that 6,000 people will donate $10 each to the cause.

He said that the money raised would go towards any additional expenses that may occur in Ms Smith’s time of need.

“Anything could pop up and I would like for her to be stress-free in case anything happens,” Mr Anderson said.

“She really doesn’t know that I am doing this — this is a surprise.

“I just wanted to do something for her to hear it, so that it can bring a smile to her face.

Mr Anderson walked the length of the Island on September 18 last year and raised more than $30,000 for the Centre Against Abuse.

He will be walking the same route on Wednesday — starting at the National Museum of Bermuda in Dockyard at 5am. He hopes to arrive at Fort St Catherine by 1pm.

The route will take him along Middle Road, over Trimingham Hill on to South Road, over Collector’s Hill back on to Middle Road and from there he will continue on North Shore Road to Fort St Catherine.

“Kamala has touched somebody throughout her life in many of these parishes,” Mr Anderson said. “This is the reason why I am walking through every parish. Everyone deserves a right to see me walking through their parish in honour of my Goddaughter.

Mr Anderson said that people were welcome to join him on his walk and that all donations were greatly appreciated.

“No matter how small it all adds up, and at least I will be grateful for her,” he said. “Thank you Bermuda for coming together as a family.”
