‘Chapel hamlet’ Morgan’s Point proposal
Planning applications to erect a “chapel hamlet” on the Morgan’s Point property have been submitted to the Department of Planning
The application, submitted by Brian and Nancy Duperreault and received by the department on June 3, proposes the construction of a new chapel building on the former baselands, along with a small museum, parsonage, storage building and parking facilities in an area off Constitution Road.
The project would also include rest-room facilities, an above-ground water tank and extensive landscaping of the property. The documents states that the chapel hamlet would be a “very open and green/landscaped space” coupled with the buildings, which would boast a “predominately traditional Bermudian style”. The applications state that they estimate around 100 visitors to the chapel on average per event, and have based the parking and the facilities on that. Mr and Mrs Duperreault applied in 2012 for planning permission to redevelop an existing church on the property as part of larger plans to build multiple hotels on the former baselands.
The building reportedly fell into a state of disrepair after the US pulled out in 1995.
