Artist’s bright idea lights up city lane
Chancery Lane has been lit up from Reid Street all the way to Front Street thanks to a new public art installation.
Project designer Tiago Garcia was one of several artists asked by the City of Hamilton to come up with ideas.
He proposed erecting more than 450 overhead light bulbs across the lane to bring “a level of intimacy to an already quaint public setting”, and his proposal was accepted.
He enlisted electrician Nick Harney, who was responsible for the installation of the lights.
“It is vital for the city to continually invest in itself, for the benefit of both locals and guests, by actively showing that it cares how pedestrians interact with public spaces,” Mr Garcia said.
“Most important to me is the creation of public art installations that have the ability to inspire anyone of any background, without discrimination; free to enjoy without any social discomfort.
“Nick was a godsend. Within the first two minutes of meeting him and discussing the project, he challenged my initial idea and made a few aesthetic suggestions.
“I knew immediately to defer my vision to Nick and since that day he has been the primary reason why the light installation looks as good, if not better, than any alleyway light installation I have seen anywhere in the world.”
Mr Harney added: “We need more of this in Bermuda. It sets the standard higher.”
The lights are set to a timer and will be illuminated between 7.30pm and 2am every night.
