Airport radio navigation work starting

Work is to commence tomorrow on the navigational equipment at LF Wade International airport, concluding late in July of this year.

While the new equipment is being implemented with the help of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), certain services will be out of commission.

Aviation stakeholders have been notified, according to the Bermuda Department of Airport Operations (DAO), both local and overseas.

The FAA was awarded the contract in August of last year, in partnership with the DAO, to repair LF Wade’s Very High Frequency (VHF) Omnidirectional Range (VOR) / Distance Measuring Equipment (DME).

This is a secondary Navigational Aid for aircraft travelling to, and departing from, Bermuda. The primary navigational services will continue to be provided using the FAA Surveillance Radar, which has been in place for many years, and the Global Navigational Satellite System that has been in place on the Island since 2008.

Both the BDA VOR/DME will be out of service during the execution phase of the project.
