Toy boat reaches Wales after island stopover
A toy boat launched at sea by school students last year in the United States has reached the coast of Wales, after getting a little Bermuda help during a stopover on the island.
The Carolina Dreamer was put together by St Andrew’s School of Math and Science in Charleston, South Carolina, and fitted with a GPS tracker as a school project.
The little vessel went to sea on May 17, 2015 — and washed up a week later in Bermuda, according to the school’s web site.
It was found by Butch Agnew, a local sailing fan, and put back out on the water, where students tracked it across the Atlantic.
The Dreamer was headed for Ireland as of last month, and news of its approach spread through marine organisations in the area.
In the end, a family strolling on the beach in Ceredigion, Wales discovered the sea battered vessel, and the story was picked up by the BBC and other media. Local students hope to refurbish the Carolina Dreamer and send her back home across the Atlantic.
