Bermuda Day Parade to be streamed online

Sylvan Richards, the social development minister

Live coverage of this year’s Bermuda Day Parade will be streamed online on the Government website.

And revellers are being encouraged to post their memorable May 24 moments on social media using the hashtags #BermudaDay and #BermudaCulture.

Sylvan Richards, new Minister of Social Development and Sports, told a press conference yesterday that Bermudians around the globe would be able to watch the parade filmed by government channel CITV at www.gov.bm from 1.30pm on Tuesday.

“Bermudians, wherever they are in the world, can gather and have their Bermuda Day party and still feel connected to home,” he said.

Mr Richards, who was wearing a Bermuda Day and Heritage Month T-shirt designed by young Bermudian artist Cullen O’Hara, said: “For the first time, we are asking residents to share their favourite holiday moments on social media by using the hashtags #BermudaDay and #BermudaCulture.

“We invite the public to also follow the Department [of Community and Cultural Affairs] on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram at @BermudaCulture to see highlights of the events.”

Parade-goers have already started staking out the best vantage points in Hamilton, using gaffer tape and marker pens.

Tuesday’s parade will begin on Marsh Folly Road and continue to the top of Cedar Avenue, before turning left onto Church Street, taking a right onto Court Street, a right along Front Street and finally up Queen Street.

Final performances will take place in front of Wesley Square on Church Street. Large trucks will turn left onto Church Street and continue west, Floats will turn right onto Church, park in front of City Hall and remain there on display throughout the afternoon.

This year’s theme for Bermuda Day and Heritage Month is ‘A Tapestry of Cultures’ and Mr Richards said it reflected the “interconnection of cultural influences that make up the dynamic mosaic of Bermuda’s people”.
