CCTV is functioning normally, say police

Bermuda’s CCTV system is in good working order, according to a police spokesman.

Speaking last night in response to news reports, the spokesman assured the public that the CCTV network is “functioning normally”, although facial recognition software has not been purchased or installed.

“The 60-month CCTV agreement provides 150 cameras in 85 locations (including 19 licence plate readers),” the spokesman said.

“The CCTV camera system has the ability to provide additional analytical data, including facial recognition, however the software to provide facial recognition was not an RFP requirement and to date has not been purchased or installed.”

Asked about the status of the camera’s wireless transmission capabilities, the spokesman said: “The CCTV system is designed for wireless transmission to the CCTV monitoring suite.

“However, high-lift trucks are used to service cameras as well as to retrieve data on those rare occasions when there is a problem with that wireless signal, at no additional cost.

“Of the 150 cameras on the network only four are situated in locations where the wireless signals are frustrated by topography.

“The BPS has taken an operational decision to continue to work with the vendor to find a solution rather than moving the four cameras to new locations.”
