An 88-year-old taxi driver has died after crashing near Barnes Corner, Southampton, last night.

The victim lost control of his vehicle before it overturned as he travelled east along Middle Road at about 9.30pm, according to the Bermuda Police Service.

He was cut free by the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service and taken to the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital with serious head injuries. At 2.20am today, police confirmed he had died, marking the 11th death on Bermuda’s roads in 2016.

After the accident last night, the white taxi could be seen laying on its side, with a section of the road blocked off as forensic police officers examined the scene.

Police said no more details will be given until the next of kin has been notified.

Any witnesses are urged to contact police on 295-0011.
