Church to prompt debate on environment

A series of films and discussions about the environment will be presented by the Catholic Church’s Peace and Social Ministry.

The committee is promising a “provocative, soul-searching and sobering” debate on the issue which was inspired by Pope Francis’s encyclical subtitled: “Care for our Common Home”.

Pope Francis had made reference to “all matters relating to the environment and our need as a social justice imperative to care for God’s creation”, according to committee chairwoman Joanne Wohlmuth.

She stated: “In addition to raising awareness, our ‘Coming Home Series’ is meant to invite us to take both individual and community steps to improve our relationship with our planet earth and all of those who live with us here, this which we call home.:

The first film in the series, Terra, is described as a gripping and thought-provoking documentary about our relationship as humans to all other species of the earth.

It will view on Friday, January 20, at 7pm at St Theresa’s Church Hall, followed by a facilitated discussion. The next film in the series will be in February.
