Relay for Life theme unveiled

Residents are being urged to form teams of 10 and take part in this year's Relay for Life to help fight cancer.

The event, which will be taking place on May 12 and 13 at the North Field, has adopted the theme of “one more” referring to “one more dollar raised, life saved, hero made”.

This year marks the fourth Relay for Life organised by Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre.

“Relay For Life is a great way to spend time with your friends, family and colleagues while raising money to support Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre's initiative to provide radiation therapy in Bermuda by mid-2017,” Deborah Titterton Narraway, event co-chair, said.

The event lasts 24 hours during which team member take turns walking around the track as well as joining in other fundraising activities.

Relay for Life also includes a survivor lap, a luminaria ceremony and a fight back ceremony.

Ms Titterton Narraway added: “About 300 people every year are diagnosed with cancer in Bermuda. Approximately 200 of these people could benefit from radiation but currently only about 100 are going overseas for treatment.

“With the opening of Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre's radiation treatment unit in a few months, this cancer treatment will now be made available to all who are referred regardless of one's ability to travel or their level of insurance.”

Ninety-five per cent of the money raised through Relay For Life will go directly to fund the new radiation treatment initiative. The remaining five per cent is used by the American Cancer Society to fund their global cancer initiatives.
