Broadway musical Groundhog Day, with Bermudian actress Rebecca Faulkenberry on stage once again, has opened with high praise after a brush with potential disaster.

“Opening night was amazing,” said Ms Faulkenberry, who has not read the reviews but heard that the critical response to Monday night’s show was “very good”.

“My parents and my boyfriend came over from Bermuda, and they loved it — and the audience, from what we’ve seen, were really touched and entertained by the story,” she added.

“Groundhog Day is an amazing concept to tackle.”

The musical, based on the offbeat 1993 fantasy in which Bill Murray played a TV weatherman doomed to relive the same day again and again, was fraught with “gremlins” as the opening neared, culminating in main actor Andy Karl injuring his knee badly on Friday during the critics’ preview.

But the show went on to triumph — persevering through what director Matthew Warchus told Variety had been “more glitches visited upon it than I’ve ever known on anything else I’ve ever done”.

Ms Faulkenberry, a veteran of Broadway productions Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark and Rock of Ages, said the cast was “taking it day by day” as Karl soldiers on with a torn ligament.

The show was nevertheless hailed as “fantastical and fun” by Variety.
