A campaign to help amputee Shachkeil Burrows buy an artificial leg has raised more than $22,000 in donations in only four days.

The “Keeping Shach Involved” GoFundMe page was launched last Thursday night to help the 24-year-old, who lost his leg in a bike accident two weeks ago, to raise money for a prosthetic leg.

The keen sportsman, who plans to become a football coach, lost his right leg from the knee down.

After The Royal Gazette reported on Mr Burrows’s positive attitude in an article last Thursday, the story migrated to social media.

And videos circulated of him exercising in his hospital bed and balancing a football with his remaining leg.

The GoFundMe page collected more than $13,000 from 135 donors in only 16 hours — more than a fifth of the $65,000 goal.

Funds continued to pour in during the weekend, taking the total to more than $22,250 by yesterday.

Khaeljah Burgess, a close friend of Mr Burrows who helped launch the page, said she was in tears when she heard the news and described the fundraising efforts so far as “incredible”.

Ms Burgess added: “It just shows you what a good character, a good spirit and a good personality can get you.”

She said Mr Burrows’s preferred prosthetic leg could cost anywhere between $65,000 and $195,000 and that more fundraising activities were being considered.

Ms Burgess added that Mr Burrows and his family were very excited and thankful and that they would “go over and beyond” to help him recover fully.
