Thousands of homes in the West End were left without power this evening after a cable fault at the Belmont substation.

A Belco spokeswoman confirmed that the outage occurred at 9.25pm when the firm noticed a fault in the 22kV transmission cables that feed out of the substation.

Belco crews are assessing the situation in order to restore power to the 5,000 homes affected.
