Police will be out this New Year’s Eve

Police will be out in force this weekend as the island welcomes 2018.

A police spokesman said officers will be “highly visible”, particularly on New Year’s Eve, in an effort to discourage antisocial behaviour.

“Also over the period the Roads Police Unit will be active with a goal of making travel on our roads safer,” the spokesman said.

“The motoring public is asked to assist us by driving responsibly and adhering to the speed limit. Without a doubt, speed kills.”

An emphasis will also be placed on drunk drivers, with the spokesman saying ten people were arrested on suspicion of driving while impaired during the Christmas period.

“Officers will be very vigilant over the New Year’s Weekend to ensure safety on our roads,” the spokesman continued.

“Officers will maintain a strong police presence to deter offenders from spoiling the festivities and it is our goal to respond quickly to any emergency.

“On behalf of the Commissioner of Police, the staff and officers of the Bermuda Police Service, we wish each and every member of our community a safe and happy New Year.”
