Wet, windy start expected for weekend

Bermuda faces a windy weekend as a northeaster storm barrels up the Eastern Seaboard.

The storm has hit a number of local events: The Royal Gazette's Drive for Change campaign has postponed the launch of its Impaired Driving Awareness Month.

The event was due to take place on the steps of City Hall tomorrow, but is being rescheduled for next week.

The Dash at Dark event, scheduled for tonight, has also been postponed until April 13.

Organisers of the annual Lindo's to Lindo's road race on Sunday have called it off until the same date.

Mariners have been advised by the Bermuda Weather Service that a small craft warning goes into effect late tonight.

A gale warning starts tomorrow morning and is likely to remain in place through Saturday night.

Strong winds are to kick in tonight, building to gale force late on Friday.

A cold front will also deliver showers with isolated thunderstorms forecast.

Winds are predicted to build from the southwest, gradually turning westerly and then northwesterly later on Saturday.

Storm force gusts are expected, the BWS posted.

According to the US media, the storm could be the strongest since a fierce winter cyclone blanketed the East Coast in January.

The storm could affect flights in cities such as New York and Boston. Heavy rain is expected to start in Connecticut and New York City later today.
