A 72-year-old woman did not think twice when her twin brother needed an urgent kidney transplant.

Patricia Trott said: “It was an easy decision to make. I didn’t, and still don’t, have any reservations.

“There was no question in my mind. It just seemed a normal response to help a sibling if at all possible.”

Ms Trott’s brother, Bernard Cooper, has polycystic kidney disease diagnosed five years ago.

The disorder causes fluid-like cysts to form on the organs, which can damage them and lead to failure.

Ms Trott said she and her twin were “very close” despite having lived in different countries for their adult lives.

Ms Trott will undergo the operation at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust in England on April 12.

She said tests at the hospital before the operation had left her “very impressed by their care and professionalism”.

She added that everything had been “proceeding to plan”.

Ms Trott said: “I am confident that due diligence has been followed, ensuring the best possible outcome.”

She is not nervous about the procedure but is “a little impatient to get on with it”.

Ms Trott added: “To be able to help someone, in my case my twin brother, gives an enormous sense of satisfaction.”

Ms Trott said her family had been a great support.

She also thanked the Bermuda Heart Foundation’s Core Health and Fitness Centre and instructor Bethany “Bee” Thurlow.

Ms Trott said: “Utilising their gym, under the guidance of Bee, I have been able to make sure I’m up to the rigours of the surgery.

“Over the last few weeks, I’ve come to realise what a wonderful facility and service they provide.”

Ms Trott said she viewed her decision to donate a kidney to her brother with pride.

She added: “I feel privileged to join the small band of people in Bermuda who have gone down the road to becoming a living donor before me.”
