Saltus 9/11 attack victim remembered
Today is the 17th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terror attacks on the United States that claimed the lives of three former pupils at Bermuda schools among the near 3,000 dead.
The names of Saltus Grammar School former pupil Boyd Gatton and Warwick Academy graduate Rhondelle Tankard, both Bermudians, are inscribed on the National September 11 Memorial and Museum in New York.
Also remembered is Robert Higley, an American citizen who spent some of his childhood on the island and also attended Saltus.
The memorial stands at the site of the World Trade Centre, where terrorists flew hijacked airliners into the Twin Towers.
As well as the roster of 2,977 names — including the six who lost their lives in the 1993 World Trade Centre bombing — the memorial is distinguished by reflecting pools, where the Twin Towers once stood.
The names are inscribed around the memorial pools.
A picture of Mr Gatton's inscription was taken by Lawson Mapp, the former Mayor of Hamilton, and shared with The Royal Gazette.
Mr Gatton and Mr Higley are remembered each year in a ceremony at Saltus. Ms Tankard will be honoured with a concert at Warwick Academy tonight.
