Michael Newell, the director behind Four Weddings and a Funeral and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, will be honoured this year at the Bermuda International Film Festival.

The British director will be on the island during the festival to receive the Prospero Award in recognition of his 40 years of work in film.

Patrice Horner, festival chair, said: “The festival is delighted to celebrate Mike’s extraordinary career with the Prospero Award.

“His career spans some 40 years, and the films he has made over those four decades are some of the most popular in history.

“We look forward to giving Mike a warm Bermuda welcome.”

Mr Newell will receive his award in a ceremony at City Hall on March 17.

Mr Newell began his career directing 1977 television feature The Man in the Iron Mask, which was later released as a feature film.

He went on to direct award winning films Dance with a Stranger, The Good Father and Enchanted April.

After the international success of Four Weddings and a Funeral, he went on to direct major films including Donnie Brasco, Pushing Tin and Mona Lisa Smile.

In 2005 he became the first British filmmaker to direct a Harry Potter film with Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

Since then, he has gone on to direct Prince of Persia, Great Expectations and The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, which released last year. Tickets for the awards ceremony are available for purchase at biff.ptix.bm.
