A wall has been given a new lease of life to honour the legacy of former top cricketer Charles Daulphin.

Mr Daulphin helped to develop local talent when he made his property on Roberts Avenue available to young cricketers.

The wall that surrounds the property was given a facelift under the Devonshire Parish Pride project.

Christopher Famous, the MP for Devonshire East, said the wall represented a rich sporting history. Mr Famous said: “Within the wall lies a field that was once used as a cricket pitch for countless young men from the ‘back of town’.”

Victoria Daulphin, wife of the late cricketer, said she was pleased by the gesture.

Mrs Daulphin said: “I’m very appreciative. I thought it was very thoughtful of Chris to paint the wall.”

She said her father-in-law and her husband, who played for Somerset Cricket Club in Cup Match, made the property available to cricketers for training, especially former club Devonshire Rec.

Mrs Daulphin said she had continued the legacy of her husband by allowing people to use the grounds near the National Stadium for parking.

She said it also served as a playground for neighbourhood children and that people also held events there.

Mrs Daulphin, who said she was still active in community work, served as the first secretary of the Electrical Supply Trade Union in 1965.

Volunteers who painted the wall said they were happy to have taken part.

Ranel Taylor, 19, said he has been unemployed and jumped at the opportunity to paint the wall.

Mr Taylor said: “We scrubbed it down and bleached it. We then primed and painted it.”

He added: “It’s actually an honour to have painted a wall in memory of a great cricketer and it feels good to have been part of making the community look better.”

Jameco Richardson said it was also an honour to paint the wall in memory of Mr Daulphin, who died aged 61 in 1998.

Mr Richardson added: “It keeps Bermuda looking beautiful ... I feel good every time I drive or ride past.”

He said people appreciated the facelift given to the wall because the wall had not been painted for many years

Mr Famous said Link Bermuda, Bermuda Healthcare Services, SAL Ltd, Island Construction and Brimstone donated paint for the wall restoration and power firm Belco donated safety equipment.
