Curb talks to resume

Truth and reconciliation talks led by an antiracism charity will resume next month.

Citizens Uprooting Racism in Bermuda urged people to attend the sessions at the Human Rights Commission for seven consecutive Wednesdays beginning on September 25.

A spokeswoman said: “We hope the public will take this opportunity to sit together with others to talk about the challenges that face us today and how we need to grow in community and understanding.”

The sessions aim to help people create empathy by sharing different perspectives.

The spokeswoman said: “The passions run deep, but so can the laughter! We haven't had anyone (yet) stomp out of the room, in fact we've only had a few that have dropped out after a few sessions, with about 97 per cent staying the course.”

This will be the fourth year of the community conversations, and Curb hopes to ultimately include 1,000 participants.

The spokeswoman said: “We see this as a critical tipping point for our society, we need to bridge the racial divide, the two Bermudas, that has existed in this community for centuries.”
