Digicel silent on repair delays
Telecoms firm Digicel was yesterday tight-lipped on whether a staff dispute over wages was to blame for repair delays.
Donn Foggo, the marketing and product manager for Digicel Bermuda, said the firm was “unable to provide comments on matters related to staff”.
He added: “We appreciate the public’s understanding.”
The company was sent several questions about service disruptions and a possible employee dispute.
Mr Foggo said that “significant damage” had been caused to the company’s network by a contractor for a utility service provider.
He added the damage was caused during excavations on the Railway Trail earlier this week.
Mr Foggo said that “serious service interruptions” were caused in Devonshire, Hamilton Parish, Smith’s and St George’s as a result.
He added: “As of Wednesday evening, Digicel was able to restore service to roughly 1,300 customers with an additional 1,000 customers’ services being restored as of yesterday morning.
“Digicel’s teams will continue to work alongside the involved parties until all remaining affected customers’ services are fully restored.”
Mr Foggo said that customers would be given updates on service restoration on the company’s social media sites and its website.
He added: “We thank our dedicated field operations, technical and engineering team who are working hard to restore the services, including the frontline customer care staff members during this time.”
A news report that aired on Bermuda Tonight on Wednesday said that Digicel staff had refused to work overtime as part of a pay dispute over wages.
The report, which quoted an unnamed source, said that the refusal by employees to work overtime had slowed service repairs.
It added that employees wanted a 2 per cent increase and had rejected a 1.5 per cent pay rise offered by the company.
