A Court Street Boxing Day tradition will celebrate its 13th year next week with a Christmas dinner giveaway for the underprivileged.Regina Peniston, a community activist, said she hoped to provide enough food for 200 homeless or struggling Bermudians.Ms Peniston said: “The demand has seemingly grown every year. Last year was huge. We had 150 to 160 people fed.“This year, we are aiming for 200 if possible. I’m confident we can do it.“We still need volunteers this year — I put it out on social media and there wasn’t really a huge response — but I remain confident.”Ms Peniston and volunteers will be on Court Street onThursday to serve a Christmas dinner with all the trimmings.Lightly used clothing and shoes will also be given away at the event, which was sponsored by Tom Kelly and reinsurance company MultiStrat Re and supported by Hamilton’s Heritage Worship Centre.Ms Peniston’s daughter, Ashanti Francis-Smith, said her mother had always emphasised the importance of charity.Ms Francis-Smith added: “She always took us out on Thursday nights with a big pot of soup and we would give it out to anybody who needed it.“Anybody who knows my mother knows she has a gigantic heart. If she can give, she will. I really look up to her for that.“She has been a real inspiration. I’m so proud of her.”Ms Francis-Smith said the tradition has become a family event and her seven-year-old daughter was also involved. She added: “It’s important to give back to your community and if you can help, you should go ahead and do it, especially this time of year.”Ms Peniston said there was still work to be done to make this year’s event a reality — and appealed for more assistance from the public. She said: “It feels exciting. I’m looking forward to doing it again, but I still have a lot of work to do.“I’m about halfway there, but I need help with the second half. I know people are waiting for it because people ask me about it on the street.”•Those interested in volunteering can contact Ms Peniston at 704-0976 or regina.red12@gmail.com.
