Delta charter flight returns 104 residents

Home at last: more than 100 Bermuda residents arrived at LF Wade International Airport yesterday, on a special charter flight from the United States, and were released after screening by the Ministry of Health. More than 100 returned residents touched down on Bermudian soil on an air-bridge flight from the United States yesterday.

The Delta Air Lines charter flight from Atlanta, Georgia, organised with travel agency Travel Edge, brought home students and residents who were stranded in the US, and people who were abroad for medical treatment.

Wayne Caines, the Minister of National Security, said the 104 arrivals went through “strict health and safety protocols” before they entered 14-day quarantine in government centres — with 18 granted exemptions.

Six of the exemptions were children and the other 12 were allowed to quarantine at home for medical reasons. He said the plane was deep-cleaned before it flew to the US with 100 passengers “of varying nationalities”, including three deportees.

David Burt, the Premier, said some students remain in Canada and they should make contact through the Government’s website, adding officials are “trying to figure out if we can get a flight from Canada”.

He said no further air-bridge flights from Britain were planned, and would likely resume whenever regular air traffic returned.
