A church feeding programme that has provided more than 20,000 meals since its launch in April is hunting for volunteers and equipment so that it can continue its good work.David Thompson, spokesman for the Christ Church, Warwick programme, said: “We have just reached 20,000 meals since inception and Friday was a record day with 291 meals prepared and distributed.”But he said the programme, introduced to assist people affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, needed more hands on deck, as well as industrial-grade fans to help cool the church kitchen.Mr Thompson added: “As we move out of the summer and into the fall season, some of our student volunteers are returning to their studies, so we will continue to look for volunteers to help in the kitchen with food preparation and serving meals.“We also need drivers.”He added: “Fans would be exciting right now, especially in this weather.”The lunchtime programme, which operated daily for three months, now runs Monday to Saturday from noon until 2pm. Between 150 and 200 meals, made up of a starch, vegetable, protein, bread, plus a dessert, are served every day.Mr Thompson added that two meals are served on Saturdays to make up for the programme’s closure on Sundays.About 40 people volunteer in the church kitchen every week.Some meals are picked up from the church on Middle Road and the programme’s volunteer drivers deliver 50 meals a day on two routes in Warwick.Mr Thompson said the programme also provided 75 meals a day, four days a week, to the Eliza DoLittle Society.He added that the charitable scheme got a boost last week from employees and management at insurance firm Liberty Mutual, who contributed more than 100 volunteer hours to help serve meals.Mr Thompson said: “They have now committed to do this one week each month until the end of the year.
