Bray, Brooks still on top
Bermuda?s latest senior tennis rankings were released this week following the Argus Open with Andy Bray and Ashley Brooks both distancing themselves from the opposition after their third consecutive tournament singles victories.
In the ladies? rankings, Brooks leapt ahead as former number one Zarah DeSilva dropped out of the top 20 along with fellow youngster Caitlin Gordon. But the youth flag is still being waved by improving Cayla Cross (up to seventh) and Argus ?B? winner Catherine Cooke (up to ninth).
Elizabeth Hartley remains second in the rankings behind Brooks with Veronica Dunkerley continuing to hold down third.
Like Brooks, Bray holds a big lead in the men?s singles rankings while Jacob Trott?s consecutive runner-up finishes have advanced him to a career-best second place.
Davis Cup players Jenson Bascome, Gavin Manders and Na?im Azhar have disappeared from the rankings through inactivity, with fellow Davis Cup hopefuls Jovan Whitter and Jevon Roberts already long gone, and the injury-riddled James Collieson dropping to third and also in danger of disappearing.
As with the ladies, the non-participation of so many top male players in local tournaments has proved a headache for national squad selectors.
Former Sri Lankan Davis Cup player Samitha Ranaweera finally got the run expected of him with a semi-final finish to move into the top ten at number eight, and Belgian newcomer Phillip Vandonick also looks like being one to watch as he makes his first appearance in the rankings at 21st.
Bray has also retained his doubles dominance where he?s been number one for several years, while partner Dave Jenkins joins him on top.
Bray is also now threatening top spot in the men?s mixed rankings after his Argus entry and subsequent victory with Sasha Fisher put him firmly in contention at number two behind runner-up Jacob Trott.
Brooks followed by Fisher lead the ladies? mixed category.
Sam Maybury has clung on to his 45 men?s top ranking, despite his recent loss to number two Earl Leader.
