?Safe Hands? celebrates tenth anniversary

This year's Cup Match Safe Hands Award winner will receive two round trip tickets to any US gateway city in addition to various other prizes, president of Blackstar Communications Rolfe Commissiong announced yesterday.

The Safe Hands Award, celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, was inaugurated in 1996 in honour of legendary St.George's Cup Match skipper Cal (Bummy) Symonds who took 24 catches in the classic between 1950 and 1969.

Somerset skipper Janeiro Tucker remains the only player to win the award on two occasions, while Clay Smith is the only St.George's cricketer to win the award since its inception a decade ago.

"We are pleased to announce that for the tenth consecutive year the Cup Match Safe Hands Award will be held," Commissiong said.

"The Safe Hands Award is an award that goes to the player judged by adjudicators ? comprised of ex players and media commentators ? to have been the best fielder over the course of the two-day match."

Somerset seamer Jacobi Robinson received the award last year after taking a spectacular catch at Wellington Oval to dismiss Charlie Marshall.

Marshall (21) needs only one more catch to move level with former Somerset skipper John Tucker (22) who sits in third spot on the all-time list of players having taking the most catches in the classic.

Somerset's Amon Hunt tops the list with 25 catches.

Bank of Bermuda, Bermuda Health Care Services and the Malcolm Butterfield family are sponsors for this year's award, while travel arrangements have been organised by Travel Planners, Commissiong noted.

This year's Safe Hands recipient will also be given free cricket gear, $700 in cash and two $50 Blackstar Communications phone cards in addition to the Cal (Bummy) Symonds cup.

A presentation ceremony will take place at Bermuda Industrial Union headquarters on Union Street on August 8.

Meanwhile, an International Cricket Council (ICC) marketing delegation and members of a Trinidad and Tobago World Cup local organising committee ? headed by 1977 Miss Universe Janelle Commissiong of Trinidad ? will be on hand at Somerset Cricket Club on Thursday and Friday to promote the World Cup and respond to any inquiries Bermudians might have regarding next year's cricket spectacle in the Caribbean.

Trinidad, located seven miles of the east coast of Venezuela, is the venue for Bermuda's Group B World Cup fixtures against Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and India next year.

In addition, Trinidadian tourism officials will also be present at Cup Match to outline what is available in the Caribbean Island and respond to inquiries related to transportation, accommodation and any other relevant information Bermudians might find useful in planning their trip to the World Cup next March.
