<Bz25>Bermuda continue to climb in FIFA rankings
Bermuda continued its upward journey in FIFA’s world football rankings last month.
The Island’s national team climbed another 15 spots from 122 to 107 after competing in the Digicel Caribbean Cup in Barbados late last month — the highest the side have been ranked in quite some time.
Bermuda finished third in their second round Digicel Cup qualifying group after losing 3-0 to St.Vincent, thrashing Bahamas 4-0 and then drawing 1-1 with host-country Barbados at the National Stadium.
They will now compete in a triangular play-off, originally scheduled to be held in Bermuda, in Trinidad and Tobago from January 5 to 7 involving Dominican Republic and Haiti for the eighth and final spot in the Caribbean Cup Finals.
“This is certainly good for football in Bermuda, having made a significant climb. This again shows that the more you play and receive positive results the more we can climb,” stated Bermuda Football Association technical committee chairman Mark Trott.
Bermuda’s next Digicel opponents, Dominican Republic, moved up 23 spots to 136 while Haiti slipped ten places to 102 — five ahead of Bermuda.
While Trott was delighted to observe the national team’s steady ascent in world football, the former national coach reckoned there was still plenty of room for improvement.
“We can’t afford to sit back now because we have the Digicel Cup coming up again early next month and it’s not going to be easy because Haiti are still ranked above us. And even though the Dominicans are below us, they do know of us and so it’s not going to be easy,” Trott added.
“Now if we can beat the Dominicans and Haiti and qualify for the finals (Digicel), I think we could even go on to crack the 100 mark on FIFA’s list.”
