Two-goal Zuill inspires Colts
(after extra time)Aljame Zuill proved yesterday just how much his services at Devonshire Colts are valued.
The veteran striker leapt off the bench in the second half and poached two goals that ultimately turned the tide in Colts’ favour and earned them the coveted First Division ‘double’.
After Clevon Hill had put Colts ahead for the second time in the match in the second minute of extra-time, Zuill stole the show by netting two classy goals as Rangers eventually ran out out of ideas.
“I was just trying to have some fun really. I felt comfortable out there, and as a team we were able to pull everything together and get the job done today,” Zuill said.
Colts had to work hard for their win against a Rangers team who stormed ahead through a Julian Caisey strike that sneaked in at the near post.
Southampton then had ample chances to bury their opponents but were repeatedly denied.
And just when it appeared as though Caisey’s goal would keep the teams separated at the half, Colts hit back through Willis Ming who stabbed home a rebound from close range after ‘keeper Gerald Simons spilled the ball into his path.
Hill then scored the first of his two goals to put Colts ahead when he turned sharply in the box and slammed the ball into the net.
Rangers, however, found themselves back on even terms within seconds as Shawn Williams drilled the ball into the roof of the net to send the match into extra-time after Colts lost possession deep in their own half.
Hill restored Colts’ lead two minutes into added time when he weaved his way through the Rangers defence and fired home from close range.
And it was then all left to Zuill who first rose high to beat Simons at the far post with a header and then slotted home from close range to put the proverbial icing on the cake.
“I think this win is going to do wonders for our club,” stated an elated Colts coach Ray Jones. “Rangers were the first team to defeat us this season, and so I didn’t think they would lay down today.
“But we had a lot of experience on our bench which I always knew I could turn to to get things to fall in our favour. And basically that’s what we did today.”
In the preceding Commercial Division Knockout final, Earl Richardson and Sergio Griffith netted braces to spur Key West Rangers to a 4-1 triumph over Robin Hood who replied through Mark (Beaver) Ray.
