Now Trojans eye trophy treble

Somerset Trojans celebrating their win in the Friendship Trophy Final

Somerset Trojans’ Friendship Trophy demolition of Devonshire Cougars on Sunday went a long way towards putting the silver back in ‘Silver City’.

Not since the 1992-93 season have Trojans managed to bag two cups in the same season.

But now Dennis Brown’s team can go one better and clinch three, something no other Somerset team have achieved since 1970.

Although the coveted Premier Division championship continues to elude the West Enders, Brown’s team have managed to loosen the stranglehold city clubs have had on domestic football over the past decade.

Trojans lifted a first Dudley Eve title in 12 years earlier this year and then annihilated Cougars 4-0 on Sunday at the National Sports Centre to emphatically announce their return as a reckoning force.

But with further glory still at stake, Brown will take matters all in stride and not get ahead of himself as his team brace themselves for this Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final clash against Boulevard — a team they have seen plenty of this season.

“We still have a lot to play for but obviously we can’t look beyond Boulevard. They have been a very difficult opponent for us all season and so we are just going to have to prepare for them like we prepare for any other game,” Brown said.

Over the years Trojans have accumulated an impressive cup record on the ‘carpet’. And Sunday’s potent performance against Cougars further strengthened their reputation.

“They basically executed the game plan the way I wanted them to on the day and it is a tradition for Somerset to perform well at the National Sports Centre with teams in the past having established their own legacies,” Brown added.

Winning a third overall Dudley Eve Trophy earlier this year only served to whet Trojans’ appetite for further success.

“We knew what it was like to win having won the Dudley Eve, and so in order to get that feeling back we had to go out there and perform — and that’s exactly what we did,” said Brown, who has played an integral role at the club for many years in various capacities.

“I’m really ecstatic to help bring success back to the community and it has been a long time coming. As a son of the soil it wasn’t a nice feeling being in the doldrums for so long.”

Following a successful coaching stint at Wolves, Brown returned west to the club he captained to many cup and league honours during his distinguished career.

“One of the objectives I set out to achieve was to have a trophy in the cabinet within five years, but this is only the fourth year and so we are ahead of schedule and making very good progress,” he said.

Trojans are among three local clubs to have lifted the FA Cup on nine occasions. However, since Brown captained Trojans to their last FA Cup triumph in 1990, the trophy has not travelled beyond Somerset Bridge in 17 years — a trend the coach hopes to bring to an end this season.

“We just have to take things one game at a time and go out there on Sunday and perform to the best of our ability,” Brown said. “And I believe the team that wants it the most is ultimately going to win the match.”
