Charity match planned for Clarke

The Island's senior football fraternity have been urged to rally for a charitable cause at Somerset Cricket Club on Saturday.

The West End club will play host to the Clarke and Fox family benefit football double header for former Dock Hill Rangers central midfielder and cancer patient Bayfield Clarke.

A double-header has been scheduled for Saturday in which former players from West End Rovers, Wellington Rovers, Dock Hill Rangers, Devonshire Lions, Southampton Rangers and Pembroke Hamilton Club (PHC) will dust off their boots and roll back the years for the charitable event.

Admission will be $5 at the gate, with all proceeds to go in aid of Clarke's medical expenses.

During the late 1950s and 60s Clarke linked up with Glen (Gappa) Wade to form one of the deadliest combinations in local football at the time.

"Bayfield (Clarke) and Gappa Wade were a terrific combination back then. They were the ones who helped carry the team through a great era," sports historian Warrington (Soup) Zuill recalled.

Dock Hill Rangers lifted the FA Cup in 1959 and finished runners up in the competition in 1960, 64 and 65 before disbanding in the early 1970s. The club also finished runners up in the former Bermuda Football Association (BFA) First Division in 1965.

"They were a very renowned team in their day," Zuill added.

Saturday's double-header at Somerset kicks off at 1 p.m.

* Western Stars Sports Club will host the third annual Randy Swan Memorial football match at St.John's Field tomorrow.

Donations collected during the match involving Premier Division side Dandy Town and Commercial A Division champions Dandy Town Roots will go toward the Randy Swan Scholarship Fund.

Swan, a former Hornets' defender, was tragically killed in a car crash after celebrating his birthday in December 2004.

In 2005 club officials retired the late footballer's number 16 jersey.
