It's been a bitter-sweet year for Key West Rangers.

Ten days ago as reigning Commercial League champs, the side stood on the verge of the double — needing only a win against MR Onions.

However disaster struck as they went down 1-0, against the run of play, and they could only sit back as local rivals Dandy Town Roots took their title with the 3-1 defeat of Robin Hood four days later.

But it all came good on Sunday as Rangers clinched the Commercial Cup on the carpet of the National Stadium with the 4-1 thumping of Robin Hood.

Coach Armell Thomas withdrew his threat to quit — as did a number of senior players after the match.

Thomas said: "Overall we are pleased but I am still a bit bitter about the league."

He was forced to re-jig the shape of the team this season as the side had to do without front men Janiero and Kwame Tucker because they were on World Cup cricket duties.

Youngster Quinton Burgess came in up front while Earl Richardson was pushed further forward while front man Sergio Griffin was pushed back.

And while the side had stumbled in their final days of league action it all clicked on Sunday.

Ironically the seeds of victory were sown days earlier as he watched Dandy Town snatch the title off Rangers.

"I had a good look at Robin Hood. If you got crosses in the 'keeper was a bit rocky."

So instead of playing down the centre where the Hood were strong, his men got down the wings and the game plan worked a treat — although he was full of praise for Hood who kept going to the last.

"The atmosphere was great, the guys enjoyed it on the carpet — much better than the normal fields. People were knocking it around, keeping it simple although it is very fast and the guys had to adjust."

And as the champagne flowed after the victory, Key West owner Darion Thomas persuaded Thomas to stay on — along with senior players Burton Cox, Ricky Mallory and Earl Richardson.

They will have one more crack at the title next season although things are getting tougher concedes Thomas, who said the season had been wide open this year as standards improved. "It was very, very close. Everybody can beat everybody. It's not like the days when Robin Hood used to dominate. It's really competitive."

Robin Hood, with just one win all season, escaped the drop on Tuesday in typical style — with a 0-0 draw against PHC.

And Tuff Dogs are also safe after getting a point from their relegation encounter with Island XI.

Both PHC and Island XI are appealing the BFA's decision not to replay their March 10 fixture which was abandoned with no official referee. The BFA awarded a point each.

Meanwhile, Somerset Extros are champions of Commercial B just one season after winning the C league.

They pipped East End rivals St. George's All-Stars who had led for most of the season.

All-Stars, a perennial yo-yo team — too good for the B Division and not good enough for the A division — are having serious thoughts about whether they want to be promoted.

Club Secretary and founding member Stephen Paynter said players had enjoyed their winning ways.

"As a result there are some reservations being expressed by some players about promotion in that Group 'A' has become even more competitive with younger and more seasoned players involved.

"There may be cause to make a decision soon about remaining in B."
