Spring grabs Games bronze

Bermuda captured just one medal on the opening day of the 36th Carifta Games in the Turks and Caicos Islands on Saturday, courtesy of middle-distance runner Mathew Spring.

Running in the boys' under-17 1500 metres, Spring finished third in a time of four minutes, 1.04 seconds — just a second slower than the gold medal winner Kemos Campbell from Jamaica, to take the bronze medal.

In the girls' under-20 long jump, former world youth champion Arantxa King's leap of 6.09 metres just failed to win another bronze as she placed fourth behind Jamaica's Kimberly William (6.15m) and Chara Proctor of Anguilla (6.17m).

Also on Saturday, Taylor-Ashley Bean and Jessica Richardson placed 15th and 16th respectively in the preliminary heats of the girls under-17 400 metres.

Bean ran a time of 1.00.11 (a personal best) while Richardson was not far behind in 1.01.33.

In the boys' under-17 400 metres, Darico Clarke came 11th out of 15 in a time of 51.24 seconds (another personal best) while Deanne Lightbourn placed ninth out of 11 in the girls' under-20 400 metres.

The girls' under-17 long jump event saw Jasmine Brunson finish sixth out of 22 with a best effort of 5.32 metres, while in the preliminary heats for the boys' under-20 100 metres, Tre Houston came in tenth out of 11 in 10.75 seconds — missing out on the final by two spots but still doing well enough to qualify for the IAAF World Youth Championships later this year.

Middle-distance runners Ashley Berry and Alexis Armstrong fared reasonably well in the girls' under-17 1500 metres with fifth and sixth-place finishes respectively — the former in 4.54.26 and the latter in 4.55.52.

Eulannae Douglas finished the girls' under-20 100 metres in 15th place in a time of 12.35 — good enough to book her passage to the World Youth Championships.

There were total of six personal bests registered through the day by Bermudian athletes.

Yesterday's results from the Providenciales stadium were not available by press time.
