Yearwood snatches silver

Twelve year-old Ashley Yearwood earned Bermuda’s second medal of the Carifta Swimming Championships in spectacular fashion, earning a silver in the 200 metres freestyle.

In a dramatic race that had the Kingston, Jamaica crowd on their feet, Yearwood fought tooth and nail with the heavily-favoured Kimberley John Williams from Trinidad and Tobago.

Turning first at the end of the third 50 metres, she was just touched out at the finish but could still reflect afterwards on a sensationally brave swim.

In the preliminaries, Yearwood broke Flora Duffy’s age group record by over five seconds and lowered her own record by a further second and half in the final to finish in two minutes, 18.76 seconds.

Other swimmers to reach the finals of their respective disciplines were Morgan Hopkins, who set a new national record in the 400 metres individual medley with a fine swim of 5.51.58 to finish seventh out of ten.

Hopkins also came seventh out of eighth in the girls’ 11-12 200 metres freestyle in a time of 2.25.26.

Nicholas Patterson placed seventh out of eight in the 11-12 200 metres freestyle in 2.21.26 while Nicole Yearwood and Stephanie Miles finished seventh and eighth in the girls’ 13-14 200 freestyle with times of 2.21.19 and 2.23.80.

Eleanor Gardner placed sixth out of eight in the girls’ 15-17 200 freestyle in 2.18.84 while Ashley Yearwood also took sixth out of eight in the girls’ 11-12 50 butterfly with a time of 33.08 seconds.

Nicole Yearwood and Rebecca Heyliger came in second-last and last in the girls’ 13-14 100 backstroke in 1.14.99 and 1.15.46 while Nick Thomson clinched fourth place with a time of 1.04.75 in the boys’ 15-17 100 backstroke.

One swimmer who didn’t make it through to his final but still broke a national record was Patterson in the boys’ 11-12 50 metres butterfly. He recorded a time of 32.07 seconds to place ninth out of 19.
