Irish too strong for Teachers in final

Bermuda Irish proved far too strong for Teachers in the final of the fourth annual Bermuda International Sevens Tournament held on the North Field of National Sports Centre on Saturday, running out convincing winners by 36 points to five.

After a full day of action involving several teams, it was a match in which the Irish outplayed and outclassed their opponents.

The opening try came from an interception by man-of-the-match Cronan Healy who outran the covering Bobby Hurdle to touch down.

Then a shivering tackle by Tyrone Howe saw the ball turned over to Healy who drew two men before slipping it outside to a grateful Darragh O’Donohugh who waltzed in untouched for a 12-0 lead.

Continuing to dictate play, the Irish made it 17-0 as Healy jinxed his way past a flatfooted Hurdle for another try. O’Donohugh danced his way over untouched to extend the lead to 24-0 before John Lacey cruised 70 metres to make it 29-0.

With five minutes remaining the Irish brought on substitutes, allowing Teachers some breathing room.

West Indies Sevens captain Hurdle was only stopped by three tacklers but his offload to Dave Porter allowed the diminutive scrumhalf to dive into the corner for a consolation try.

But it was the Irish who had the last laugh when Eoghan O’Dwyer showed his pace after being released down the line by Healy. Michael Kane converted to make the final tally 36-5.

Irish thus won their third straight Bermuda International Sevens title, earning a prize of $2,500.

In the preceding ladies’ final, Nova and Empire City Blues fought it out for the trophy and a thousand dollars in prize money with Nova prevailing 26-7.

Two early tries from Dana Creager put the girls in purple up 14-0. Then Nova’s outstanding player, Beth Black, orchestrated tries for Katie Miller and CJ Hilbreth to give them a commanding 26-0 lead.

Empire City earned a late consolation try by Katlyn Lamin.
