Heyliger wins bronze

Rebecca Heyliger capped the final day of the Carifta Swimming Championships earlier this week by earning Bermuda’s fourth medal, a bronze in the 50 metre freestyle with a time of 28.30 seconds.

The 14-year-old Heyliger was in a competitive field and, according to national coach Richard Goodwin, “displayed her athletic abilities to their fullest extent” as she fought through the entire race for her medal.

Meanwhile, Ashley Yearwood captured her fifth national age group record in this meet when she reset her own 400 metres freestyle record — shattering it by over 14 seconds with a time of 4.57.86.

Her sixth and final age group record was set in the 50 metre freestyle as she took Flora Duffy’s record with an excellent time of 29.49, giving her ownership of all of the butterfly and freestyle records in the 11 and 12 age group.

“This competition has been a resounding success for the Bermuda team and is a tribute to their dedication to their sport,” said Goodwin yesterday.
