Panthers crowned league champs

Panthers were crowned men’s league champions on Sunday after storming to a 5-1 victory over Polecats.

With just two matches left to play in the season, they sealed the title.

Lee Uddin put Polecats on the board with an open play goal in the fourth minute. But after that their offence went dry.

Dave Horan stepped up for two Panthers’ goals before the close of the first-half on his way to a hat-trick.

Matt Spencer added two more for the Panthers before Horan put away the final goal on a short corner routine in the 68th minute.

With 36 points, no team can catch them and the battle in the men’s league is now for second with Chameleons sitting on 25 points, Upstarts 22, Polecats 16 and Rebels seven.

Chameleons suffered a 6-2 trouncing at the hands of Upstarts in other weekend play.

Phil Trussell netted four goals in the winning effort while Kirk Edmunds added another two.

Mark Finnigan and Peter Illston were the goalscorers for Chameleons.

In women’s A league play, Ravens confidently knocked down Canaries 7-1.

Both Emma Simmons and Megan Troake grabbed hat-tricks on the way to the win with Caroline Black also getting her name on the scoresheet.

Aline Harris scored the lone goal for Canaries.

Wildcats and Swifts stalled at a 2-2 draw in their Saturday match.

Wildcats pounced for their first goal ten minutes into play, courtesy of Valencia Holder. Tracey McPhee then successfully put away a penalty stroke awarded 16 minutes later.

But Swifts also capitalised on a penalty stroke awarded to them in the second half, which Keishae Robinson drove home.

Yvonne Osborne then found the equaliser.

Swallows have a lock on the A league table with 38 points, followed by Ravens on 29, Canaries on 14, Swifts on 10 and Wildcats with nine points.

In B league competition, Swifts collected six points on the weekend with wins over both Wildcats and Canaries.

The young squad shut out Wildcats 3-0 on Saturday with goals from Keishae Robinson, Angela Dunstan and Jasmine Patterson.

Sunday saw another decisive victory, 4-1 over Canaries.

Keishae Robinson, Katie Davidge, Angela Dunstan and Kaitlyn Miller netted a goal each while Karla Preece put Canaries on the board.

In other B play, Ravens shut out Swallows 6-0. Liz Gardner had two goals in the winning effort while Jessica Hollis, Alex Wheatley, Jennifer Adderley and Bridget Jarecki each nabbed one.

Swifts have a slim lead over Ravens in the standings with 50 points to Ravens’ 48. Bluebirds follow with 31 points, Swallows with 24, Wildcats with 18, Cardinals with 17 and Canaries trail with 12.
