Locals aim to clinch Race Week titles
Bermuda’s Malcolm Smith, Peter Bromby and Allen Williams can all clinch their respective classes when International Race Week resumes today in the Great Sound.
Smith currently leads in the Lasers by a five-point margin over compatriot Brett Wright and should retain the International Race Week Championship trophy with another consistent showing today.
The past World and European Sunfish champion has placed no lower than fourth this week, a finish that he discarded during last Tuesday’s drop.
But nearest rival Wright has also sailed consistently this week and with class president Tracy Usher and 2007 Pan Am Games team -mate Sarah Lane Adderley out of contention, he is now the only skipper who can prise the title away from Smith.
Bromby, likewise, can also pop open the bubbly with another dominant afternoon in the Etchells today.
The Island’s 2008 Olympic hopeful has so far had things all his own way during Race Week. And although multiple Female Athlete of the Year and former match racing champion Paula Lewin has managed to steal some of his thunder, Bromby enters today’s penultimate day of the regatta with a healthy seven-point lead over Lewin.
Ironically, Lewin’s brother Andreas is crewing onboard Bromby’s Etchell this week.
Another local skipper, veteran Tim Patton, is now well off the pace and facing close competition from Aussie skipper Bill Steele for third place honours.
Williams can also savour the sweet taste of victory by wrapping up the J-105 Race Week title and claiming the BW Walker Memorial Trophy with another strong showing on the Alpha course.
But he will have to keep a close eye on compatriot Jon Corless who narrowly trails heading into the final two races.
The North American Snipe Championship will also be decided today on the Bravo course where Americans have dominated all week.
Augie Diaz is the fleet’s current leader by four points over second placed Ernesto Rodriguez and nine over George Szabo.
Stevie Dickinson is the highest placed Bermudian skipper to date in eighth spot overall followed by Luis Chiapparro (15th) and Timothy Lynch (19th).
A three-way battle for the Gripper Trophy between England’s Stuart Jardine and Bermuda’s Trevor Boyce and Pete Ramsdale will also be decided today in the J-24s.
Jardine currently leads second-placed Boyce by four points with Ramsdale a further three points adrift in third.
Action should also heat up in the IOD class as newly crowned ‘A’ Series winner John Burnham attempts to protect his lead for the overall title against perennial nemesis Bill Widnall, local favourite Somers Kempe and overseas rival Urban Ristorp.
