Dear Sir,

I would like to thank Warwick Workmen’s Club for being the perfect hosts last Wednesday, April 18, when my snooker team, the Old Colony Club II, took on Warwick’s number one team in the League Cup final.

There was a warm welcome when we walked in the club, as you would find any time. The snooker table was in perfect condition for a final to be played on.

A special thanks to the person or persons who put on the food that was enjoyed by all. Unfortunately, my team were defeated 4-1 by Warwick Workmen’s Club, who played some outstanding snooker and were worthy League Cup champions.

Once again thank you Warwick for a job well done.

Dear Sir,

The May 24 Marathon Derby committee must be congratulated for bringing this most famous race into the modern age.

If it would have stayed in its humble way it would still had been the world’s best race to me. Bermuda spectators on the whole make it that way.

The committee have been very public in who has become a sponsor, where those sponsor dollars have gone, giving out to charity, plus to a specific person, adding big dollars in prizes, not only for the main winners but for us — mid to back-of-the pack runners.

Thanks to all who have given, and especially to those who will be there volunteering on race day. Hopefully by the 100th (race) there would be picture timing or chip timing for the possible 1000 competitors.

The race can show improvement now with one of the basics. The early advertising of this most famous race could be a lot better, but it was not good before too.

The committee cannot just think that the race sells itself. Runners do things on habit as well, like going to the sport shops, and reading or viewing the most popular media.

The Friday Forum of 27th of April was mostly right about the lateness of entry forms to the running public. He and I did not realise the race committee, I think, had ads in on the 13th and 27th of April’s Bermuda Sun, and a very small ad in the 27th of April’s What’s On section of The Gazette.

Those Bermuda Sun ads were very vague, full of other info, and hard to follow. It even said registration/pledge sheets are available at Cellular One shops. Who and where are they? Runners call them entry forms.

In closing, we hope that the rest of the basics are cared for better in advance, like volunteers, timing, water stations . . . done a lot better than the advertising of entry forms for the race.

The committee could get ideas from the affiliate clubs’ vast experience, but would they follow their suggestions or rather put all the emphasis on the glitzy things. A suggestion was made to the BTFA recently to have non affiliate races scrutinised more, for the benefit the running public.
