Goal drought not a worry — Khano
Khano Smith has yet to hit the back of the net for the New England Revolution this season. But the goal drought doesn’t seem to be bothering the former Dandy Town striker in the least.
“It would be nice to score, but that is not my main role in the team. I may not be scoring but I am still contributing in other ways,” Smith told The Royal Gazette on the heels of the Revs’ 3-1 demolition of Chicago Fire at Gillette Stadium over the weekend.
Smith received rave reviews for his lightning pace down the left side and for setting up his team’s eventual game-winner after Chicago had erased Jeff Larentowicz’s early first-half strike.
“It’s not a big concern for me because I know that at some point I am going to score, and so I am not really worried about that. As long as we are winning and I am contributing in others ways then I’m happy with that,” he insisted.
The Revs were without inspirational playmaker Shalrie Joseph during Sunday’s win against Chicago. Joseph was sent off for committing a soft foul during the Revs’ away match against DC United, shown live on national TV last week.
This gave Smith the added burden of keeping things tidy in the middle of the park. And the striker came through with flying colours — although he is looking forward to having Joseph back in the fold.
“He is probably our best all-around player and a miss to any team. He’s probably one of the best midfielders in the entire league,” Smith said.
“But we are not depending on one player. We just have to press on and play our game and we do have a deep squad.”
And it is this sort of depth that could possibly end the Revs’ Major League Soccer cup jinx come season’s end.
During Sunday’s match, the visitors took an early lead. But after making two changes, the Revs drew level midway through the second half before Smith finally made his presence felt by laying the groundwork for his team’s eventual winner.
Smith’s cross at the back post found Steve Ralston who made no mistake with his shot on goal. Sunday’s game was the Revs third in eight days and Smith admitted yesterday that fatigue might’ve played a factor in his side’s performance which saw the Eastern Conference team gradually lose command after forcing the opposition on the defensive early.
“It was our third game in a week and so we were definitely a bit tired. So we had to dig deeper when they equalised. I think they were actually bit stronger than we were in the second half. But we just had to dig deep and find a way, and we did exactly that,” Smith said.
The Revs are off to a good start this season with three wins, one loss and two draws under their belt. Smith now hopes he and his team-mates can continue to build on the early success.
Smith and the Revs hit the road again on Thursday for Los Angeles where they will meet the LA Galaxy next Sunday — a team they blanked 3-0 at the National Sports Centre (NSC) during their annual winter pre-season tour of Bermuda.
Asked his thoughts on the Revs’ next opponents, Smith said: “We’re playing pretty decent football at the moment. This is a business and so we just have to continue doing what it is we have to do.
“We can’t take anything for granted and so it’s up to us to try and play well all of the time. LA are a good team and I expect they will be tough because there are no easy games in this league.”
