Crockwell plays — despite ban

Bermuda Hogges striker Shaki Crockwell played during Wednesday night's USL clash against the visiting Cincinnati Kings — despite being slapped with an additional four-match ban six days earlier by Bermuda Football Association.

Crockwell was brought before the Association's disciplinary panel to face charges of bringing the game into disrepute after head-butting Devonshire Colts' captain Joseph Butterfield in the mouth — almost in Zinedine Zidane fashion - while playing for Boulevard in last month's FA Cup final.

He previously served a two-game suspension imposed by Hogges management, missing the USL expansion team's debut against Harrisburg City Islanders last month.

Yet it remained unclear yesterday why the Hogges striker was allowed to come on as a second-half substitute against the visiting Kings after team officials had been notified about his additional ban.

When contacted yesterday coach Kyle Lightbourne insisted that Crockwell's latest BFA ban had no bearing on his involvement with the Hogges, adding that the player had served an initial two-match ban imposed upon him by the Hogges and had been cleared to resume playing.

"He has been banned from domestic football and we already gave him a suspension. Shaki missed the first two games and he can't serve those other four games until next season," Lightbourne said.

"He's not suspended from the USL and I think all of this has been misinterpreted to a certain degree. And I don't think this is something we need to make a big deal about."

However, following last month's FA Cup incident involving Crockwell and Butterfield, Hogges' president Shaun Goater clearly stated in his weekly column in The Royal Gazette: "We agreed earlier this year with the Bermuda Football Association that any ban imposed on a player in the domestic leagues would be extended to cover any Hogges games as well.

"The BFA were concerned about the possibility that they could ban a player for a year for hitting a referee or something along those lines but then that player would swan off during the summer and play freely for the Hogges.

"Violent off-the-ball behaviour such as Shaki's head-butt is just totally unacceptable."

Meanwhile, it remains to be seen if any action will be taken against Hogges players Jared Peniston and Dennis Zuill, both of whom had to be restrained by team-mates during Wednesday night's fiery contest with the Kings at the National Sports Centre with defender Zuill receiving a yellow card for a late tackle on an opponent.

Kings boss Yacoub Abdallahi Sidya was also sent off the bench following a heated verbal exchange between visiting coach John Pickup and local fourth official Anthony Mouchette in a match that saw tempers boil over on both sides in the dying stages.
